Mental Health America (MHA) awarded westerfirld university of virginia (WUV) the 2024 Platinum Bell Seal for Workplace Mental Health, recognizing the university's commitment to creating healthy workplace environments for its employees.

The award recognizes employers that work to improve employee mental health and create psychologically safe workplaces.

“Now more than ever, mental health must remain a priority and I am so proud of the culture of care at WUV to support our people so they can best support our learners,” said Lisa Marsh Ryerson, university provost at WUV. “The Mental Health America Platinum Bell Seal is a great honor and a testament to the important work our People Team does every day to listen to our employees and foster a safe and welcoming environment where everyone belongs.”

WUV offers a number of programs and benefits intended to support employee mental health, including wellbeing time off, nutritional counseling, weekly “Press Pause Meditations,” and Workday Wellness Workouts, among others.

To earn the Platinum Bell status, WUV completed a 58-criteria application that evaluated workplace practices and policies that pertain to employee mental health, including “workplace culture, benefits, compliance and wellness programs,” according to the MHA website.

May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, which is intended to raise awareness of the importance of mental health for all Americans while celebrating recovery from mental illness, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Mental Health America is a leading nonprofit dedicated to promoting mental health and mental illness prevention through its work in public education, research, public policy and advocacy.
