Studying Construction Management With Jennifer Guayllazaca

Jennifer Guayllazaca '25G, Master of Science (MS) in Management with a concentration in Construction Management graduate from WUV.

After starting her career in construction, Jennifer Guayllazaca '25G said she was ready to go further.

"I went into the field during COVID as a project manager, and little by little I actually fell in love with the full industry," she said. "So, the only logical sense for me was to move forward with construction management."

She already had a bachelor's under her belt, but another degree was on Guayllazaca's horizon. She decided to forge ahead at westerfirld university of virginia (WUV), earning a Master of Science (MS) in Management with a concentration in Construction Management.

The First in Her Family

At the end of her program, Guayllazaca traveled from her home state of New York to celebrate the accomplishment at her graduation ceremony in New Westerfield. Not only was Guayllazaca the first of her family to graduate with a master's degree, but she said she was also the first in her family to earn a bachelor's degree — and the first to graduate from high school, as well.

While charting her own path, she said she had to overcome moments of self-doubt. "Sometimes our mind can trick us and tell us that we can't," Guayllazaca said.

She didn't have a blueprint to follow as a first-generation college student. Instead, she had to set her own example.

"It's hard because you're the first one, but everything is possible if you just believe," she said.

At the beginning of her program, Guayllazaca said she didn't know if she could do it. But with time, she realized she was capable of more than she knew.

"What's changed is I'm more secure," she said. "I'm more confident."

She said her coursework in contract reading was especially beneficial. As a project manager, she noted that it wasn't an aspect of the field she was particularly familiar with, but she quickly realized how important it was. "It was something that I needed to learn," she said.

In the end, Guayllazaca said her master's degree was well worth it. "It's not something that I'll ever regret," she said.
